‘John Wick: Chapter 4’ final trailer shows new canine sidekick, samurai-inspired body armor
The final trailer for “John Wick: Chapter 4” has been released, giving audiences one last look at the film’s all-star cast — including Wick’s new canine sidekick — before its release.
Familiar faces from previous installments include Laurence Fishburne as the Bowery King, Ian McShane as Winston and Lance Reddick as Charon, although the latter does not appear in the trailer.
Joining Keanu Reeves (John Wick) are Donnie Yen as Caine, Rina Sawayama as Akira, Hiroyuki Sanada as Shimazu, Shamier Anderson as Tracker, Bill Skarsgård as Marquis and Scott Adkins as Killa.
Yen and Sawayama prove to be deadly killers in the trailer, with Yen single-handedly slaying multiple enemies and Sawayama taking down a man twice her size.
Of course, it wouldn’t be a “John Wick” film without a dog. This time around, Wick is joined by what appears to be a Belgian Malinois, the same breed of dog that fought alongside Halle Berry’s character Sofia in “John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum.”
The trailer also provides a more detailed view of the cities in which Wick will be fighting for his life.
Wick’s latest fight for freedom will see him facing a variety of assassins in places such as New York, Paris, Osaka and Berlin.
The trailer features multiple shots of the the Eiffel Tower — which appears to have a High Table command center built into it — a hectic gunfight in the streets surrounding the Arc de Triomphe, a struggle for survival against heavily armored foes in neon-lit streets of Japan and a horseback shootout in Jordan’s Wadi Rum Desert.
Reeves recently spoke about the significant influence that Japanese culture and anime have had on the franchise.
Japanese anime and Japanese filmmaking have definitely been something I’ve loved and have been influenced by. And bushido is definitely a theme in our film – you know, the code of the samurai – so, from the outside, it feels like a great fit, the idea of honor and sacrifice. There’s definitely a strong Japanese influence.
These influences are apparent in the recent trailer, although the newest installment is the first in which Wick actually travels to Japan.
A closer look at the armored enemies seen in the shots set in Osaka reveal samurai-inspired plating and masks resembling men-yoroi face plates.
“John Wick: Chapter 4” will be released in theaters on March 24.
