Filipino comedian Jo Koy and American TV personality Chelsea Handler announced their breakup via Instagram after nearly a year of dating.
Handler, 47, revealed in an Instagram post on Monday that she and Koy, 51, will be going their separate ways.
The former “Chelsea Lately” host shared a short video that they had previously recorded ahead of their one-year anniversary. In the clip, which has already received more than 2.2 million views and 164,000 likes, the former couple shares what they have learned about being in a relationship over the last year.
“In anticipation of celebrating our first year together, Jo and I recorded this video early, but as many of you have noticed, it is with a heavy heart to announce that we have decided together that it is best for us to take a break from our relationship right now,” Handler wrote in her post’s caption.
“I know many of you were invested in our love, and I wanted to express to you how much that meant to both of us. How much it still means. And how much I now believe in love for each one of us,” she continued.
Handler also included a message to Koy in her caption, saying, “Jo- you blew my creativity open, my lust for working hard again, being on the road again, and you reminded me who I was and always have been, and my feet have never been more firmly planted in the ground.”
While it is unclear why the couple split, Handler and Koy expressed their continuing love and support for one another.
“This is not an ending. It’s another beginning, and it’s a comfort to know that I am still loved and love this man the way the sun loves the moon and the moon loves the sun. Your person is coming,” Handler wrote before asking their fans to continue rooting for them by watching Koy’s first feature film “Easter Sunday.”
Koy also shared a photo of them on Instagram and expressed his support for Handler. He told fans that they will remain friends.
“Just want everyone to know that Chelsea and I will always remain great friends and will always have love for one another,” Koy wrote. “I’m her biggest fan and I can’t wait for you all to see what she has in store for the future. Keep killing it Chelsea! Mahal kita!”
Koy frequently appeared on Handler’s former show “Chelsea Lately” before they first announced their relationship on Instagram in September last year after being friends for almost 20 years. They made their red carpet debut as a couple in December at the 2021 People’s Choice Awards.
Handler recently filled in as a guest host for “Jimmy Kimmel Live,” which excited her fans about her possible return to late-night television.
Koy’s new movie “Easter Sunday,” which is inspired by his own life experiences, will premiere in theaters on Aug. 5.
