School Board Candidates Targeted By Racist Fliers Win in Landslide Victory
After suffering through racist campaign mailers targeted at them, two Asian American school board candidates in Edison, New Jersey have won the School Board Election in a landslide victor.
Jerry Shi and Falguni Patel were elected with 6,259 and 6,115 votes respectively and will serve a three-year term on the Edison Township Public Schools board.
Both Asian American candidates got the highest vote totals in the race, Reapproriate noted. Beth Moroney was the third candidated elected with 5,991 votes.
Last week, Shi and Patel were both targets of racist campaign fliers that were mailed out to residents in their neighborhood. The fliers title “Make Edison Great Again,” called for the deportation of Shi and Patel. Ironically, Falguni Patel is actually born and raised in the U.S.
“I’m obviously disgusted by it, to say the least,” Patel told local radio station NJ101.5. “I didn’t expect anything like that. We live in such a diverse town, it’s very shocking somebody would put that in writing.”
“I was born and raised in New Jersey. To see the word ‘deport’ on my picture — where are you going to deport me to? Really, it’s just outrageous.”
Hopefully, their victories will be a shining beacon to their horrible experience last week.
