‘King of Mandopop’ Jay Chou reigns supreme with world’s No. 1 album

Taiwanese singer-songwriter Jay Chou’s album “Greatest Work of Art” was the bestselling album in the world for 2022.
As revealed by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI) on Tuesday, Chou had the most album sales globally last year. The IFPI 2022 Global Album Sales Chart is based on combined global physical and digital album sales.
The renowned singer was followed by Korean boy band BTS in second place and American singer Taylor Swift in third place.
K-pop groups dominated the rest of the top 10. Stray Kids took fourth and eighth place, while pledis_17 took the fifth and ninth spots. ENHYPEN, BLACKPINK and TXT complete the list in sixth, seventh and 10th, respectively.
Chou’s 15th album was released in July 2022 after he ended a six-year hiatus. The album was not only the first Mandopop record to top the chart, but also the first to place in the top 10.
In response to the big news, Chou expressed his thanks on Facebook through his company, JVR Music.
“This is a historical moment for Mandopop. This is beyond my imagination,” the post read. “Thank you all. This proves that music may come in different languages, but art transcends language.”
Since his debut in 2000, Chou has been dubbed the “King of Mandopop” for his various skills — singing, songwriting, producing, rapping, acting and more — and record of over 30 million sales. Reaching beyond the boundaries of Taiwan, Chou has also made notable appearances in Hollywood, including “The Green Hornet” and “Now You See Me 2.”
