Did you know that Japan has an annual test that can tell a person how well they know their feline friend?
What it’s about: Known in Japanese as “neko kentei,” this cat aptitude test has been held annually in Japan since its inception in 2017, according to SoraNews24. The test purportedly measures how much a person knows about cats and aims to deepen people’s knowledge about them.
The latest test: Nippan Segmo, the company behind the test, reportedly opened registration on Aug. 8, coincidentally landing on International Cat Day. Interested participants can sign up until Feb. 22, 2024, Japan’s National Cat Day.

The test will be held in Sapporo, Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka and Fukuoka on March 24, 2024.
What to expect: The Neko Kentei will run for one hour with 100 multiple-choice questions. Test-takers who finish and pass the test will receive a customized business card and a badge indicating which of the three levels they passed.
About the levels: Neko Kentei has three levels of difficulty: “elementary,” “intermediate” and “advanced.” Each difficulty is catered to an individual’s scope of how much they want to learn about their feline friends.
The elementary level is for people who enjoy being around cats but do not want to cause them stress, while intermediate is for those who want to take responsibility for caring for a cat over their lifetime. Lastly, the advanced category is for people who want to understand a cat’s feelings, behavior and medical care.
Cost for the exam: Until Sept. 29, Nippan Segmo is offering a discounted price for the Neko Kentei registration, starting at 4,750 yen (approximately $33) for the elementary level, 5,700 yen (approximately $39) for the intermediate level and 6,800 yen (approximately $47) for the advanced level.
