After starring in more than 200 films over his 56-year career in movies, Jackie Chan has ‘finally’ won an Oscar.
The Chinese action star was awarded a gold statuette as an “Honorary Oscar” in recognition for his decades of contributions to the film industry.
“After 56 years in the film industry, making more than 200 films, after so many bones, finally,” said the 62-year-old martial arts hero in his acceptance speech at the annual Governors Awards on Saturday.
Chan said he remembered moments with his parents while watching the Oscar award ceremony every year and his father would always ask him why he hadn’t won any Oscars award despite being in so many movies.
The international star later praised Hong Kong, his hometown, for making him “proud to be Chinese.”
He also expressed his appreciation to his fans, who, according to him, were the reason “I continue to make movies, jumping through windows, kicking and punching, breaking my bones.”
“Rush Hour” co-star Chris Tucker was joined by actress Michelle Yeoh and Tom Hanks in introducing Jackie Chan. Hanks, who referred to him as “Jackie ‘Chantastic’ Chan,” said it was gratifying to acknowledge Chan’s work since martial arts and action comedy films were two genres often overlooked by award-giving bodies.
The star-studded gala dinner was attended by several Hollywood stars, including Denzel Washington, Ryan Reynolds, Nicole Kidman, Lupita Nyong’o, Emma Stone, Dev Patel. and Amy Adams among others.
