Indonesian Woman Caned in Front of Cheering Crowd For Standing Too Close to Her Boyfriend

A young woman whose only crime was “standing too close to her boyfriend,” was publicly caned at a mosque in Indonesia on Monday.

The woman was among the seven men and six women aged between 21 and 30 who were punished under the province’s Sharia law.

Aceh is the only province in the Muslim-majority nation that has been imposing Sharia law since it was granted special autonomy by Indonesia’s central government in 2001.

Under the strict Islamic laws, offenders may face floggings for engaging in various prohibited acts such as gambling, drinking alcohol, gay sex and others.

For the recent batch of “sinners,” six couples were found to have broken the laws banning intimacy. Such offense may have involved touching, hugging and kissing while outside of marriage.

One man was reportedly given lashings just for spending time with a female in a hidden location, an action that under the law, may have caused adultery. A pregnant offender’s caning was temporarily postponed until she can give birth.

“The punishment will be handed down after she gives birth,” Aceh Deputy Mayor Zainal Arifin was quoted as saying. The mayor also expressed that he hoped the public punishments should serve as a warning to people.

“We hope there are no more people in Banda Aceh who break the law in future,” he said.
