HBO unveils teaser trailer for Park Chan-wook-directed series ‘The Sympathizer’
HBO released the teaser trailer for its upcoming limited series “The Sympathizer,” an adaptation of Viet Thanh Nguyen’s Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, on Wednesday.
The show is “an espionage thriller and cross-culture satire about the struggles of a half-French, half-Vietnamese communist spy during the final days of the Vietnam War and his resulting exile in the United States,” according to its official logline.
Vietnamese Australian actor Hoa Xuande (“Cowboy Bebop”) plays the main protagonist. Robert Downey Jr., who is an executive producer on the show, plays multiple roles, such as a CIA operative and a politician, with each role symbolizing different parts of the American establishment.
South Korean filmmaker Park Chan-wook, who directed 2022’s “Decision to Leave,” will direct “The Sympathizer,” which he developed with Don McKellar. The series is a co-production between HBO, A24 and Rhombus Media in association with Moho Film and Cinetic Media.
In addition to Downey Jr., the show’s executive producers include Nguyen, Park, McKellar, Kim Ly and Jisun Beck. The show’s writers include Tea Ho, Naomi Iizuka, Anchuli Felicia King, Maegan Houang and Mark Richard.
“The Sympathizer” is set to debut in 2024 on HBO’s newly rebranded streaming service, Max. Check out its teaser trailer below:
