HBO Max and Cartoon Network have released the first images from the set of a new live-action special based on Corinne Tan, Mattel’s American Girl 2022 Girl of the Year.
Announced earlier this month, the 60-minute special currently has the working title of “American Girl: Corinne Tan.” Miya Cech will portray the 13-year-old ski enthusiast, while her real-life sister, Kai Cech, will play Corinne’s 10-year-old sister Gwynn.
One of the shared images shows Miya and Kai wearing matching outfits with their Corinne and Gwynn American Girl doll counterparts. Another image features Fish, a dog who will portray the sisters’ pet onscreen.
The new special will follow Corrine as she and Gwynn cope with their parents’ divorce and navigate life with their new blended family. Corrine also discovers a new ambition after helping a puppy named Flurry become a search-and-rescue dog.
Author Wendy Wan-Long Shang and freelance illustrator Peijin Yang worked together to develop the backstory and characters of “Corinne” and “Corinne to the Rescue,” two books about the first Chinese American character to join Girl of the Year, American Girl’s popular annual doll lineup.
In an earlier statement, Shang said she hopes that Corinne can provide better representation for Asian Americans.
“What I really hope is that there is some part of Corinne’s story that makes readers feel seen, whether it’s because they are Asian American, or because they’re part of a blended family, or because they love skiing,” Shang was quoted as saying. “I think when readers feel seen, they realize that they matter and their experiences matter and that they are meant to be the stars of their own stories!”
The special will premiere on Cartoon Network in December before being made available on HBO Max the following day.
