A skate shop in Hawaii is making headlines for only selling pairs of Yuto Horigome x Nike SB Dunks to customers who can kickflip outside the store.
About the rule: 808Skate in Kailua, Hawaii, announced the unconventional rule in an Instagram post on Aug. 24.
“To purchase a pair from us you will be required to first LAND a kickflip (on your own skateboard with the shoes you show up here wearing) on the sidewalk in front of our store within three tries,” the store wrote.
The special sneakers were made available in the store on Aug. 25.
Other rules: Besides the kickflip, 808Skate stated that customers can only buy one pair of the sneakers in their shoe size. They must also be “prepared to wear them out of our shop after your purchase.”
How people reacted: Several Instagram users praised 808Skate for its rule, which they view as a way to deter resellers from getting their hands on the sneakers.
“I’m reading all these comments and everyone that don’t skate are salty,” one user commented.
“Basically been working my whole life toward this moment,” another user wrote.
Legendary skateboarder: First announced in early August, the Yuto Horigome x Nike SB Dunks can now be found in stores across the nation, as well as online on Nike’s website, for $130.
Horigome, 24, made history in 2021 when he won the first-ever gold medal for skateboarding at the Olympics. Skateboarding was one of the five newly added sports at the Olympics that year.
