‘Grave of the Fireflies’ Poster Has Heartbreaking Easter Egg Discovered 30 Years After Release

The discovery happened when fans re-visited some of Isao Takahata’s works after his passing in 2018, including the late director’s 1988 film “Grave of the Fireflies,” which is regarded as one of the saddest movies ever made, Kotaku reported.

In the Japanese poster, eagle-eyed fans noticed something different hiding behind what seems to be a dark night sky.

Turning the brightness up on the image reveals what appears to be a hidden B-29 bomber flying over Seita and his younger sister Setsuko as they play outside in a cloud of fireflies.

“Grave of the Fireflies” follows the story of two siblings in Japan as they struggle to survive during World War II when their home city of Kobe is destroyed, according to AV Club.

But the plane is not the only hidden object in the poster. Another user also altered the color on the image even further and discovered that some of the lights are not fireflies, but bullets or bombs raining down on the children.
