Google’s New Pixel Buds Can Translate Chinese, Japanese and Korean in Real Time

The California-based tech giant demonstrated its new Google Pixel Buds during the unveiling of new products including the Google Pixel 2 and Google Pixel 2 XL on Wednesday.

The new earbuds — accompanied by Google’s virtual “Assistant” — can act as your own personal translator.

However, the keynote presentation did not exactly go into detail on the Chinese language — whether it can only translate Mandarin, Cantonese or other dialects used in the country, South China Morning Post reported.

During the demo, an American English speaker used the earbuds with a Google Pixel 2 handset and tried to have a conversation with a Swedish speaker in her native language.

It only takes a couple of seconds before Google Assistant translates the word or phrase it hears or spoken in the set language.

“That was one of the best tech demos I’ve seen in a long time,” Current Analysis Research Director for Consumer Platforms & Devices, Avi Greengart, said. “If it works like that in the real world, that is a ‘Wow, we are living in the future’ moment.”

Another feature of the new Google earbuds is the touchpad, which can be found on the right earpiece.

According to Ars Technica, users can pretty much take control of the earbuds just by doing certain actions such as tapping the right earpiece to access it, swipe forward and back for volume control as well as send text messages via voice to text.

In terms of battery life, the Google Pixel Buds can last for up to five hours of continuous use on a single battery charge. However, it does come with a charging case that can hold up to 24 hours worth of battery.

Google Pixel Buds are not available for pre-order and it’s currently priced at $159. It is set to be released in the U.S. in November.
