Google surprised its home page’s visitors with a free-to-play, anime-inspired video game doodle to celebrate the opening of the Tokyo Olympics.
About the doodle: Google collaborated with Japanese animation studio STUDIO 4°C to create “Doodle Champion Island Games,” according to The Mercury News.
  • Players must help a calico cat named Lucky explore an island, discover Easter eggs, complete several sports mini-games and hidden challenges.
  • The main goal is to “defeat each sport Champion to collect all seven sacred scrolls,” according to Google.
  • The game, which Google says is the “largest interactive #GoogleDoodle ever,” even includes animated cut scenes, side quests and features a 16-bit art style.
  • The doodle will remain on Google’s home page for more than a day, Engadget reported. New games will be added throughout the next few weeks.

Behind the scenes: Google also uploaded a video to its GoogleDoodles YouTube channel to share details about the creation process of the game.

  • In a Q&A with Google, developers from STUDIO 4°C shared that they were “able to allude to various stories from Hokkaido in the north to Okinawa in the south.”
  • “Besides drawing inspiration from stories known across Japan,” they added, “we also hoped to convey the rich and diverse natural beauty of the country, including underwater, sandy tropical beaches, forests and snowy mountains.”
