‘Godzilla Minus One’ breaks record for top-grossing live-action Japanese movie in the US
“Godzilla Minus One” has achieved a new milestone in the U.S. by becoming the highest-grossing live-action Japanese movie.
Record-breaking premiere: The 2023 action and sci-fi film has earned a record-breaking $14.36 million at the box office since its premiere in the U.S. on Dec. 1. “Godzilla Minus One,” which is the 37th film in the Godzilla series, made over $11.4 million at its North America opening, surpassing the box office performance of “Godzilla 2000: Millennium” and the previous record-holder “The Adventures of Milo & Otis.” On Rotten Tomatoes, the film was certified fresh, earning a 97% score with critics and 98% with audiences.
Increasing demand: Due to its success, “Godzilla Minus One” has seen increased demand, prompting distributor Toho International to add more screens, bringing the total to 2,540 locations, up from 2,308.
The success was celebrated by the cast members and director Takashi Yamazaki, a renowned CG animator and VFX artist.
“I am happy that Godzilla, of all characters, has eclipsed a record that had not been broken for a long time. Looking back, I think that the cast and crew were all working on the film with the same goal in mind: to make something entertaining! That is what led to such a wonderful result. I will always remember this,” he said in a statement.
About the film: The film takes the franchise back to its Japanese roots, exploring themes of war and nuclear weapons that were central to the 1954 original. In this post-World War II context, the appearance of the legendary kaiju sends Japan further into turmoil, a symbol of the country’s negative, or “minus,” state.
The film features an ensemble cast including Ryunosuke Kamiki, Minami Hamabe, Yuki Yamada, Munetaka Aoki, Hidetaka Yoshioka, Sakura Ando and Kuranosuke Sasaki. It was first released in Japan on Nov. 1, coinciding with the release date of the first Godzilla film in 1954.
