‘Ayo Gee Gee’: Girls’ Generation mark 15th anniversary with comeback album
Legendary K-pop girl group Girls’ Generation (SNSD) are back to celebrate their 15th anniversary with their new comeback album “Forever 1.”
SNSD’s seventh studio album is packed with nine songs aside from its title track. The song “Villain” was co-written by members Sooyoung and Tiffany, the latter of which also helped with the composition. Veteran SM Entertainment producer Kenzie, who previously worked on their debut track “Into The New World,” helped with the lyrics and composition of the group’s new title track.
“We asked her to make it in celebration of the group’s 15th anniversary,” Taeyeon was quoted as saying. “The song has lyrics about eternal love for the people who are precious to us and says, ‘Let us be forever.’ I think the song is a perfect match for us because it contains what the Girls’ Generation can say at this time.”
Sooyoung shared that their comeback has been in the works since their 14th anniversary, saying, “Today is the birthday of Girls’ Generation, actually, we had been discussing the comeback since we celebrated the 14th anniversary. But we felt we would like to roll out the album properly on the 15th anniversary.”
SNSD’s eight members reunited for the first time in years on the show “You Quiz On The Block” back in September. The last album they released as a group was “Holiday Night” in 2017.
After the release of “Holiday Night,” members Seohyun, Tiffany and Sooyoung left SM Entertainment later that year. Most of the group’s members have kept busy with their own careers as soloists and actors. Members Taeyeon, Yuri, YoonA and Sunny still are all part of the subunit Oh!GG, which was formed in September 2018 with their debut “Lil’ Touch.”
Taeyeon was recently a co-host on Season 2 of the Mnet reality singing show “Queendom.” She also released her third studio album “INVU” back in February and joined SM’s new “Avengers”-style girl group, Girls on Top the Beat, with her fellow SNSD bandmate, Hyoyeon, as well as soloist Boa, Red Velvet’s Seulgi and Wendy and Aespa members Winter and Karina back in January.
Hoyeon made a comeback with the single “Deep” back in May, while YoonA and Seohyun are currently starring in the K-dramas “Big Mouth” and “Jinxed at First,” respectively. Seohyun starred in a Netflix film titled “Love and Leashes” earlier this year, and Sooyoung is the lead of an upcoming drama titled “If You Wish Upon Me” slated for release next week. Tiffany, a soloist signed under Transparent Arts since 2019, will make her K-drama debut in “The Youngest Son of a Conglomerate.” Meanwhile, Yuri was confirmed for a role in an independent film titled “Dolphin” back in 2021 and vlogs on YouTube, which Sunny does as well.
As evident by their busy lives, it’s no wonder that Sooyoung and Taeyeon both reflected during the press conference on how challenging getting back together has been.
“Before, we all belonged to the same agency, so we had a lot of time to play together whenever we wanted. But now, since we’re focusing on individual activities, the time we gather together feels so precious,” Sooyoung was quoted as saying.
“To tell the truth, it was not easy to gather the opinions of eight women, but what the bandmates have in common in their minds is that they love the band. I think having the same goal is what brought us this far,” Taeyeon added.
When asked about future plans, Taeyeon said they had yet to figure anything out.
“We didn’t have enough time to think about our past and future because we have just gotten together after five years of individual activities and the present is the most important,” she said. “So please watch us through our activities for this album. We will decide on the future path based on what we felt and learned through them.”
“Forever 1” is now out digitally. Its physical drop is scheduled for Monday.
