‘Fullmetal Alchemist’ Shows White Hollywood How to Properly Make a Live-Action Anime Film

Warner Bros. Japan has released a new trailer for the live-action adaptation of “Fullmetal Alchemist”, the popular anime series that follows two brothers trying to resurrect their deceased mother through alchemy.
Fans were quick to compare the upcoming film to the recent live-action “Ghost In The Shell,” which flopped at the box office partly because of casting controversies that accused it of whitewashing. The film, which stars Scarlett Johansson, earned a dismal $19 million in its first three days.
In contrast, “Fullmetal Alchemist” comes with a full Japanese cast, reports ComicBook.com. It’s worth noting that the original anime was predominantly composed of Europeans, so we’re excited to see how the new film turns out.
For the uninitiated, “Fullmetal Alchemist” centers on the Elric brothers, Edward and Alphonse, whose quest to revive their dead mother Trisha brings unfathomable consequences — Edward loses his limbs, while Alphonse loses his entire body.
In the new trailer, the brothers are seen in events that would lead their way to The Gate, a place of damnation where anyone performing human transmutation is summoned to face judgment.
The rest of the story chronicles Edward and Alphonse’s journey to become State Alchemists in hopes of locating a so-called Philosopher’s Stone, which would bring their original bodies back. However, the stone in itself has limited powers, and the brothers must face a dystopian government where atrocities are commonplace.
