The 40-year-old former professional boxer spent 100,000 yuan ($15,000) to adopt the baby panda last week in Chengdu, Sichuan, western China.
Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding showed some pictures of Mayweather feeding his adopted baby panda, who was previously called Maodou, or soy bean, and was born in July 2016, according to South China Morning Post.
Mayweather, who came to China a few months after his match with mixed martial arts (MMA) superstar and champion Conor McGregor, in August, admired the cuddly cub in the photos as he tried to feed it with apples and take selfies with TMT Floyd Mayweather.
The panda is not going anywhere despite the adoption, though.
Shanghaiist reported that the cub will remain in its sanctuary in Chengdu while the money that Mayweather spent on the cuddly animal will be put to good use including expenses and to pay the staff who take care of TMT Floyd Mayweather.
The panda will be called Soybean again in one year, unless the real Mayweather forks over another $15,000.
Mayweather’s latest visit to China was part of his tour across the country that lasted for an entire week. In an Instagram post, the boxing superstar shared his itinerary for the trip, which included a Beijing visit on Nov. 27, Chengdu on Nov. 29, Hong Kong on Dec. 1, Macao on Dec. 3 and Shanghai on Dec. 4.
Mayweather and 23 other members of his entourage reportedly didn’t spend much during the China tour. An unnamed entity paid him $3 million for the China trip, which also included a meet-and-greet with some of his fans in the country.
