Manager of mountaineering company Seven Summit Treks, Thaneswar Guragai, confirmed that Nguyễn Thị Thanh Nhã, who also goes by Céline Nha Nguyen, successfully summited Mount Everest at 3:30 a.m. on Monday. Nguyen was praised by a representative from the company who pointed out that her achievement marked a monumental milestone for the Vietnamese climbing community.
Mount Everest, located in the Mahalangur Himal sub-range of the Himalayas in Nepal, is the tallest mountain in the world standing at 8,848 meters (29,029) above sea level.
Nguyen is hoping to complete the Seven Summit quest, which refers to the seven tallest mountains in the world: Kilimanjaro, Elbrus, Aconcagua, Carstensz Pyramid, Denali, Vinson Massif and Mount Everest.
Nguyen has so far completed two of the seven summits including Vinson Massif, the highest peak in Antarctica standing at 4,892 meters (16,050 feet). In January, she successfully trekked the peak while carrying a 70-liter pack in harsh weather conditions.
On May 12, 48-year-old Nepalese single mother Lhakpa Sherpa reached the summit of Mount Everest for the 10th time, becoming the first woman to achieve such a feat. Sherpa broke multiple records, recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records, when she became the first woman to scale Mount Everest three times in 2003. Sherpa now lives in Connecticut with her two daughters and a son and is hoping to climb K2 next, the world’s second highest mountain.
