First Asian American TV Network ChimeTV officially launches
ChimeTV, the first Asian American TV network and first woman-owned one, was officially launched on Lunar New Year.
Founded by Filipino American Faith Bautista, ChimeTV is America’s first English-language Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) Entertainment TV Network.
ChimeTV, which stands for “Creating History In Media Entertainment,” will feature “modern general entertainment programming – over 70% of which is new to US TV audiences – including dramas, comedy, procedurals, food, travel, lifestyle, wellness, news, mixed martial arts, and digital creator content,” the company said in a press release.
Bautista currently serves as the CEO of the National Diversity Coalition, an organization advocating for greater financial equality and empowerment for underserved groups, and is also part of numerous advisory boards.
Bautista noted the lack of AAPI women on television in a statement.
As the only female Asian American TV Network owner and CEO, I pledge to work diligently to open the door for the AAPI creative community. We, particularly women, are vastly underrepresented and even inappropriately portrayed in movies, on TV screens, and behind the camera.
Government officials and AAPI celebrities and influencers gathered at the Japanese American National Museum in Los Angeles on Jan. 21 to celebrate the TV network’s launch.
Philippine Consul General in Los Angeles Edgar B. Badajos said the network was “making history” and appealed for more AAPI representation on television at the launch event.
We hope that this initiative will inspire other media entities to also expand their programming to include more AAPI stories, telling about our struggles, hopes, dreams and achievements to the American mainstream. In the not-so-distant future, we hope to see a new generation of Americans who are open-minded, inclusive and no longer blinded by antiquated notions that inspire xenophobia.
ChimeTV will also be available on multiple devices and platforms, including smart TVs, mobile, tablets, desktops and laptops.
