EXO Member Chen Pens Letter Revealing Marriage to Pregnant Fiancée
By Carl Samson
EXO member Chen has announced his plan to marry his girlfriend in a handwritten letter to his fans on Monday.
In his letter, Chen shared that he was nervous to break the news but he “couldn’t hold it any longer.”
“Hello, this is Chen. I’m writing because I have something to tell you. I don’t know how to start and I am very nervous to break the news. But I wanted to be the first to tell my fans, who showed love and support for me, so I’m writing despite my crude writing,” Chen wrote, according to Allkpop.
“I have a girlfriend who I want to spend the rest of my life with.”
“At first, I was worried about the consequences of my decision,” the 27-year-old idol continued. “But I was discussing it with the label and the members on how to deliver this, so you won’t be surprised out of the blue. But then I was graced with good news.
“Now that I couldn’t do what I have been planning with my label and members, I worked up my courage, though I am not fully prepared. I couldn’t hold it any longer.”
The K-pop industry is notorious for being unsupportive when artists engage in romantic relationships.
Time and again, reports of management labels banning trainees and even well-known stars from dating have surfaced on the internet.
Chen’s label, SM Entertainment, provided more details following the idol’s announcement and said that he will be marrying a non-celebrity in a private ceremony.
“Hello. This is SM Entertainment. Chen has met someone precious to him and will be getting married. The bride is a non-celebrity, and the wedding will be held privately with only their families in attendance,” the company said, according to Soompi.
“To respect their families’ opinions, the wedding and everything related to it will be held privately, so we ask fans and reporters for their kind understanding.”
“Chen will continue to work hard as an artist. We ask you to send Chen lots of blessings and messages of celebration.”
The label reportedly added that Chen’s fiancée was pregnant, but it did not disclose how far along she was in her pregnancy.
“I appreciate my members who genuinely congratulated me, and thank you very much for your love and support. I will be forever grateful for your love, and I will do my best in my place, as usual, to reciprocate your love. Thank you always,” Chen concluded.
Chen, whose real name is Kim Jong-dae, is one of EXO’s main vocalists.
Some fans congratulated him on his upcoming marriage, and others made jokes in an attempt to lighten up the news.
