Emma Stone Shouts ‘I’m Sorry’ For ‘Aloha’ Whitewashing During Sandra Oh’s Golden Globes Monologue
By Ryan General
Among the few highlights of the 76th annual Golden Globes Awards on Sunday was Sandra Oh calling out films “Aloha!” and “Ghost in the Shell” for whitewashing, and actress Emma Stone obliging with a surprising response.
Oh, who was delivering this year’s monologue alongside co-host Andy Samberg, praised “Crazy Rich Asians” for being “the first studio film with an Asian American lead since Ghost in the Shell and Aloha.”
Stone starred in 2015’s “Aloha” while Scarlett Johansson led the live-action version of beloved anime “Ghost in the Shell” in 2017. Both Stone and Johansson earned backlash for whitewashing, as their roles were supposed to portray characters of color.
Stone, who was nominated for her role in “The Favourite,” was in the audience for Sunday’s ceremony. Apparently apologizing for her portrayal of her character Allison Ng, Stone was heard yelling “I’m sorry!” somewhere off camera after Oh made her joke.
Oh then held her hand over her heart to acknowledge the ad lib response while the audience members burst into laughter.
On Twitter, netizens also enjoyed Stone’s off-screen apology:
Oh, who later took home the Golden Globe for Best Actress – TV Drama for “Killing Eve,” ended the monologue with an emotional statement about “change.”
“I said yes to the fear of being on this stage tonight to look out onto this audience and witness this moment of change,” Oh said. “And I’m not fooling myself. I’m not fooling myself, next year could be different, but right now this moment is real. Trust me, it’s real. Because I see you and I see you, all these faces of changes. And now, so will everyone else.”
