Fencing star Edgar Cheung Ka-long won Hong Kong’s second gold medal at the Asian Fencing Championships in Seoul on Sunday.
Cheung, 25, beat China’s Mo Ziwei 15-6 in the grand finals of the men’s individual foil event. The win marked Cheung’s second time winning Asian Championship gold after his first in Wuxi, China, in 2016.

Cheung, who won Hong Kong’s first Olympic gold medal in 25 years at the Tokyo Olympics last year, currently sits at the No. 1 spot in the world rankings for individual men’s foil, just above Italy’s Daniele Garozzo.
I fenced quite well and am satisfied with my performance,” Cheung, who also won gold at the fencing World Cup in Paris in January, told South China Morning Post. “The hardest one was the semi-final – fortunately, I dealt with it when I was behind.”
The semi-final match he was referring to was against China’s Wu Bin. Cheung was in an uphill battle against the Chinese fencer but managed to overtake him with a final score of 15-13.
The Asian title, as well as his top ranking, have certainly boosted Ka-long’s confidence for the worlds,” head coach Zheng Kangzhao told the Post. “I hope he forgets about all his medals – they’re all past tense. Just take one competition at a time and the results will speak for themselves.”
Fellow male Hong Kong individual fencer Ryan Choi Chun-yin also snagged a win on Sunday, tying with Wu for bronze. On Friday, women’s individual épée fencers Vivian Kong Man-wai and Natalie Chan Wai-ling won Hong Kong’s first gold and bronze medal, respectively.
