Golden Globe Nominated Chloe Zhao to Direct ‘Sci-fi Western’ Dracula Film

Filmmaker Chloe Zhao’s next project is a non-traditional take on a classic monster character.

Different Dracula: Zhao has been tapped by Universal Pictures to helm a science-fiction western spin on the popular vampire character Dracula, The Hollywood Reporter revealed.

The 38-year-old director will also write and produce the film under her production outfit Highwayman.
“I’ve always been fascinated by vampires and the concept of the Other they embody,” Zhao was quoted as saying.
The announcement of Zhao’s take on the Dracula mythos coincides with the 90th anniversary of Universal’s classic “Dracula” directed by Tod Browning this year.
“We are thrilled to be working with her as she reimagines one of the most iconic outsider characters ever created,” said Universal Pictures president Peter Cramer.

In demand: The new project comes in the heels of Zhao’s recent Golden Globe nomination, as NextShark previously reported.

On Wednesday, Zhao became the first Asian woman to receive a directing nomination from the Golden Globes for her work on “Nomadland.”
“Nomadland,” which Zhao wrote, produced and directed, is among the most acclaimed movies of 2020.
Zhao is currently doing post-production work on Marvel Studios’ “Eternals” which wrapped up filming in February 2020.
The MCU film is set to be released in theaters on Nov. 5.
