Disney Plus announces new slate of Korean originals for 2024

Disney Plus on Monday announced four new Korean titles for 2024, bringing the total to seven so far into the year.
What they are: The latest series titles include thriller “Blood Free,” mystery “Unmasked,” action-thriller “The Tyrant” and crime drama “Gangnam B-Side.” Reality show “The Zone: Survival Mission” will also return for a third season.
“The new Korean originals announced today really builds on the positive momentum and success of our APAC content slate last year,” Carol Choi, Disney’s executive vice president for original content strategy in APAC, said in a news release. “We will continue to scale our creative ambition with a curated collection of APAC originals, centered on quality storytelling and top talent, in collaboration with the region’s most exciting storytellers.”
The streamer previously announced “Lightshop,” an adaptation of the web comic of the same title by Kang Full, and period drama “Uncle Samsik,” which named “Parasite” actor Song Kang-ho as lead star. More Korean titles are expected to arrive throughout the year.
About “Blood Free”: “Blood Free” stars Ju Jihoon (“Kingdom”) and Han Hyojoo (“Moving”). The series follows a former bodyguard haunted by the failures of his past and recruited to protect the CEO of a controversial lab-grown meat company, who also happens to be a survivor of an attack that changed his life.
About “Unmasked”: “Unmasked,” which stars Kim Hyesoo (“Signal,” “Under the Queen’s Umbrella”), follows a group of investigative journalists fighting for their careers after broadcasting a controversial story. To save their jobs, they are given the impossible task of solving a 20-year-old cold case involving a famous actor who mysteriously disappeared.
About “The Tyrant”: “The Tyrant” follows a U.S. government agent in his attempt to recover a deadly new virus stolen from the South Korean government. The series is expected in the second half of the year.
About “Gangnam B-Side”: “Gangnam B-Side” follows a pariah detective who gets involved with an investigation after his daughter’s friend goes missing in Seoul’s Gangnam area. While searching for clues, the detective uncovers something that threatens to topple the city’s elite.
About “The Zone: Survival Mission” Season 3: The third season of “The Zone: Survival Mission” will see the return of Kwon Yuri and Yoo Jaesuk alongside new hosts former UFC fighter Kim Donghyun and YouTuber Dex. The foursome must reportedly survive an increasingly complex range of challenges.
About “Lightshop”: “Lightshop” is an adaptation of the web comic by Kang Full, creator of last year’s popular series “Moving.” Starring Ju Jihoon, Lee Jungeun (“Parasite”), Park Boyung (“Oh My Ghost”) and Bae Seongwoo (“Veteran”), “Lightshop” follows a group of strangers each struggling with a traumatic event and mysteriously drawn to a light shop located at the end of a dingy alleyway.
About “Uncle Samsik”: “Uncle Samsik,” which stars Song Kang-ho (“Parasite”) and Byun Yo-han (“Mr. Sunshine”), is set in 1960s Korea and follows an idealistic politician and a mysterious political fixer called Uncle Samsik. Together, the pair form an uneasy partnership to help transform a struggling post-war Korea into a prosperous country.
