Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis introduces portal for Chinese citizens to register property
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has introduced the SecureFlorida Portal, through which Chinese nationals and foreigners from “countries of concern” must register their property.
About the portal: The portal, which comes as part of a law signed in May, aims to restrict individuals from countries perceived as U.S. enemies from purchasing homes and land. The legislation prohibits those affiliated with the People’s Republic of China or the Chinese Communist Party from acquiring property and mandates the registration of all owned property in Florida.
“Under Section 692.203, foreign principals from other countries of concern may acquire property located within 10 miles of a military installation or critical infrastructure facility only under limited circumstances and must register such property with FloridaCommerce,” the governor’s office noted, according to Florida Daily.
Civil penalty: Foreign principals who own or acquire an interest in real property before July 1, 2023, are required to register their property with Florida Commerce by Dec. 31. Failure to file the registration on time may result in a civil penalty of $1,000 for each day the registration is overdue.
“Protecting Floridians”: Gov. DeSantis emphasized the importance of protecting Florida’s security against foreign adversaries.
“Protecting Floridians and Florida’s infrastructure from agents like the Chinese Communist Party and other foreign adversaries is important to our state’s security,” said DeSantis. “I am proud to have signed the strongest legislation in the nation to fight back against foreign malign influence.”
Meanwhile, legal challenges to the law by the American Civil Liberties Union and the Asian American Legal Defense and Education Fund are ongoing despite a judge’s refusal to block its implementation in August.
