‘Cyberpunk: Edgerunners,’ ‘Demon Slayer,’ ‘Spy x Family’ win big at Crunchyroll Anime Awards 2023
Crunchyroll held its seventh annual Anime Awards ceremony in Tokyo on Saturday to honor the Japanese animation industry.
Meanwhile, “Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Entertainment District Arc” took home multiple awards, including Best Action, Best Animation, Best Director (Haruo Sotozaki) and Best Fantasy.
“Jujutsu Kaisen 0,” was awarded Best Film, while “Spy x Family,” which led this year’s nominees with a total of 19 nods, had several wins, including Best Comedy, Best New Series, Best Ending Sequence and Best Supporting Character (Anya Forger).
According to Crunchyroll, 18 million votes were submitted by anime fans from 200 countries to determine this year’s winners. This year’s awards ceremony featured several stars who love anime, including Hollywood directors Justin Lin (“Fast and the Furious” franchise) and Robert Rodriguez; actors Finn Wolfhard, Hunter Schafer and Jacob Bertrand; and sports stars such as Juju Smith-Schuster, Aidan Hutchinson and Zelina Vega. The streaming platform also notably enlisted streaming celebrities, such as Sykkuno and Valkyrae.
Crunchyroll broadcasted the awards ceremony live on various platforms, including YouTube and Twitch. To host the special event, it invited Japanese voice actor Sally Amaki and local entertainer Jon Kabira.
