‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Becomes the Most Successful Studio Rom-Com in Almost a Decade
By Carl Samson
“Crazy Rich Asians” is now the most successful Hollywood studio romantic comedy film in nine years at the U.S. box office.
The Warner Bros. movie achieved the feat after finishing Labor Day with $117 million, passing the $110.2 million of Amy Schumer’s “Trainwreck” in 2015.
This marks the top showing for a rom-com since Walt Disney’s “The Proposal” in 2009, which raked $164 million in North America, the Hollywood Reporter noted.
According to Time, “Crazy Rich Asians” has led the domestic box office for three straight weeks, collecting $22.2 million as of Sunday.
Warner Bros.’s “The Meg” ($10.5 million) and Paramount’s “Mission: Impossible — Fallout” ($7 million) ranked second and third, respectively.
Directed by Jon M. Chu, “Crazy Rich Asians” opened in mid-August to massive hype and critical acclaim.
The film stars Constance Wu, Henry Golding, Michelle Yeoh, Awkwafina, Gemma Chan, Chris Pang, Sonoya Mizuno, Ken Jeong, Harry Shum Jr. and Ronny Chieng.
With a predominantly-Asian cast, the film is the first from a major studio since “The Joy Luck Club” premiered nearly 25 years ago.
