Collin Morikawa breaks record after second major title win at 2021 British Open

American professional golfer Collin Morikawa took home his second major title at the 2021 British Open on Sunday.
Historic win: The 24-year-old golfer bested three past major winners — Jordan Spieth, Louis Oosthuizen and Jon Rahm — at the 149th Open Championship at Royal St. George’s Golf Club in Kent, England, according to CBS Sports.
- Morikawa made a par putt on No. 10, a birdie from a distance on No. 14 and another par on No. 15. He also scored eight birdies over his last 30 holes.
- “My execution was a little iffy, but I knew there was going to be some trouble, knew I would run into some tough spots,” Morikawa said, according to Morning Read. “My putting stats may not be the best, but I made the ones I had to make.”
- Morikawa became the first golfer to win two majors during his debut, with the first one at the 2020 PGA Championship in Harding Park in San Francisco.
- He is also the fourth American to win The Open before the age of 25, taking home the coveted five-pound Claret Jug and $2.07 million in prize money.
Other details: Although he recently won the title of “Champion Golfer of the Year,” Morikawa told the media he already has his sights set on more majors down the line, CNN reported.
- “I enjoy these moments and I love it, and I want to teach myself to embrace it a little more, maybe spend a few extra days and sit back and drink out of this,” he said. “But I just want more. When you’re in these moments and you truly love what you do, which I love playing golf and competing against these guys, these are the best moments ever because the nerves push you to just be a better person.”
- Morikawa, who began his professional career in 2019, will represent the U.S. at the Summer Olympics in Tokyo. He is also set to compete at the 2021 FedEx Cup and the Ryder Cup.
