College Freshman Dies After 3-Minute Drinking Challenge at Bar in China

A 19-year-old college student recently died after taking the challenge of a bar in China that dares its customers to drink six cocktails in under three minutes.
The incident happened on June 19 when Wang Yaodong, a university freshman, went out with some of his friends to celebrate after taking an exam, Shanghaiist reported. The bar in Zhuhai, China was offering a promotion at the time that challenges its customers to finish six cocktails, which is 1,800 milliliters (7.6 cups) in total. If they can finish it in under three minutes, it’s free. If they fail, they will have to pay 168 yuan (around $25) for the drinks.
Unfortunately, the challenge was too much for Wang. According to his friends who were with him at Zhuhai at the time, the university student suddenly lost consciousness and slumped his head to his chest before collapsing to the floor.
His friends tried everything to help him including making him throw up, but to no avail. Things turned grim as Wang’s lips slowly turned purple and his pulse weakened. This prompted the group to call an emergency response team and bring him to the hospital.
However, instead of assisting the students to call an emergency response team, the management of Zhuhai tried to stop them saying that it’s bad publicity. The club owner, after 40 minutes of frantic deliberation, had decided to drive Wang and his friends to the nearest hospital.
Wang was not breathing and had no pulse when he arrived at the hospital, said the report. Doctors and attendees were temporarily successful with their resuscitation. The next day, however, Wang’s condition deteriorated quickly and was soon proclaimed dead.
Many netizens are now debating and who should be held responsible for Wang’s death. Some believe the student should’ve turned down the challenge of Zhuhai bar, while there are some that criticized the country’s drinking culture, as reported on AsiaOne.
