K-Pop’s ‘Baddest Female’ got the sauce and it’s her new single ‘Spicy’

K-pop superstar CL, former leader of popular South Korean girl group 2NE1, is making a triumphant return with her new single “Spicy.”
New flavor: The 30-year-old singer-songwriter officially released the song on Tuesday as the first single off of her upcoming debut studio album “Alpha,” along with a music video for the song, People reported.
- “Spicy” marks the latest offering from K-pop’s rap queen, following her single “Wish You Were Here” in February 2021.
- In a statement, CL shared her excitement in dropping the first single off her new album, in which she collaborated with producer Baauer and lyricist Sokodomo.
- She said this about the song: “‘Spicy’ is classically CL, following ‘The Baddest Female,’ ‘Hello Bitches,’ even ‘Menboong/MTBD.”
- The track infuses CL’s brand of K-pop rap with western pop, a fusion of styles the singer described as a celebration of “being Korean, being Asian.”
- CL earlier announced that a second single would be released in September, while the full “Alpha” album is set to drop in October.
- A day after its release, “Spicy” topped several iTunes charts in Asia, including Cambodia and Singapore, according to Korea JoongAng Daily. It also ranked in the top 10 in 13 countries, including the Philippines, Thailand, Argentina, Brazil and Turkey.
Featuring actor John Malkovich: CL’s latest track features a surprise appearance from Hollywood veteran John Malkovich, who can be heard narrating the song’s opening and can be seen in its music video as a golden statue.
- On Instagram, CL shared a recording of her FaceTime call with the 67-year-old actor, who congratulated her on the single’s release.
- “First of all, I’m your No. 1 fan,” Malkovich said in the call. “I’m very proud of you. I’m very delighted to see you back recording, singing and dancing. It’s really moving for me, and I’m very proud of you.”
CL was the leader and main rapper of the girl group 2NE1 until it officially disbanded in November 2016, NextShark previously reported. She made her North American debut as a solo artist later in the same year with a successful tour in the region.
