By King Malleta
Known for her witty and straightforward remarks, Chrissy Teigen has something interesting to say about Asian models.
During a brief interview at the Sports Illustrated 2017 launch, Chrissy Teigen was invited for a few questions by a correspondent from E! News. When asked about her opinion regarding diversity involving the modeling industry, the American model was quick say something about her Asian roots.
“I want it to be a normal thing to be able to see Asian models, and I think Asian models are really underrepresented in the industry, especially on the runways or in magazines,” Teigen said.
And with regards to cultural appropriation which is a controversial subject in Hollywood nowadays, Chrissy also has some opinion regarding the matter. The recent dispute revolved around the debatable fashion spread published by Vogue magazine where model Karlie Kloss dressed up like a geisha.
“I personally am not offended by cultural appropriation of any sort because I feel like it does pay homage, but at the same time there are a lot of beautiful, beautiful, beautiful, Asian women that could do the same thing,” she said.
And because of the many negative criticisms Karlie’s photo received, Vogue has decided to remove the spread from their website.
Although born in the United States, Chrissy’s dad is from Norwegian descent while her mother is Thai. Unlike other celebrities who shy away from their roots once they hit stardom, Chrissy has always proudly represented her cultural background.
