A Chinese grandfather named Jiansheng Chen was playing Pokémon
The 60-year-old man was just sitting in his minivan in a parking lot in Chesapeake, Virginia, when a fight broke out between him and the security guard.
Chen’s attorney, Greg Sandler, told WTKR News that the elderly man showed up to a clubhouse in the neighborhood because there was a Pokémon Go gym located there.
He also pointed out how a gym differs from catching Pokemon.
A gym requires you to stay put in one location so you can train your critters,” explained Sandler.
Chen’s brother said that the 60-year-old grandfather barely spoke English except for words such as “sorry” and “bye”.
Sandler believes the altercation occurred due in part to a language barrier.
I cannot imagine what could have justified shooting through the front windshield of Mr. Chen’s van five times,” Sandler told the news station.
He added: “His family is a homeowner in the area. Ironically, he is one of the people security is supposed to be protecting as a homeowner.
The River Walk Community Association said the neighborhood only hires “unarmed roving patrol services,” so it is unclear why the security guard was carrying a gun in the first place.
Sandler said the family told him that Chen was not a gun owner, according to CBS News.
Police have not released the identity of the security guard because he has yet to be charged.
Investigation into the alleged shooting is still ongoing.
