The TV adaptation of DC Comics’ “Black Lightning” has cast Chantal Thuy for its first season.
Thuy will play Grace Choi, a bartender who becomes the love interest of Anissa Pierce (Nafessa Williams), the daughter of Black Lightning (Cress Williams). In the comics, she has superhuman strength, durability, speed, stamina and accelerated healing due to her Amazonian ancestry.
As she realizes her powers, Choi befriends Anissa, who possesses the ability to control her body’s density and create shockwaves simply by stomping her feet.
Thuy, repped by Joseph Le Talent Agency and Play Management, is known for her performances in “Pretty Little Liars,” “Madam Secretary,” “Crossing the Rubicon” and “Matador.”
Born and raised in Montreal, Quebec, the Canadian actor studied at the Stella Adler Studio of Acting in New York City before building a career on both stage and screen.
According to Broadway World, Thuy has performed with the Pan Asian Repertory Theater in the Vietnamese play “We Are” and the international Galli Theater in New York City, as well as in stage readings with AAPEX, Ma-Yi Lab Theatre, and the Hollywood Fringe Festival.
Her stage credits include “The Seagull” (Nina) and “Winter’s Tale” (Perdita) with the Harold Clubman Lab, and “The Lady Was Gentleman” (Marie Louise-Yvette L’Amour) with the Broads’ Word Ensemble. She became a company member of the latter after her acclaimed performance.
Meanwhile, Choi, a comic book fan, is a recurring role in the show’s first season, Variety noted. She first appeared on DC’s “Outsiders” Vol. 3 No. 1, which was released in 2003.
“Black Lightning” airs on the CW in 2018.
