Vietnamese Model Sparks Outrage, May Be Fined for ‘Offensive’ Dress at Cannes Film Festival

A Vietnamese model who showed up at the 72nd Cannes Film Festival in a look that left little to the imagination has received widespread condemnation in her home country.
Ngoc Trinh, 29, attended the French film festival on May 19 for the premiere of “A Hidden Life,” a movie following an Austrian farmer who refused to fight for the Nazis in World War II.
Trinh’s see-through, bodice-style dress left little to the imagination of spectators, some of whom had been photographed staring at her direction.
The beaded black outfit came with a pair of glittering black high heels, which elongated the model’s already towering legs further.
The revealing dress has caused “public outrage” across Vietnam, according to the country’s Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism.
“She is not an artist that the ministry sent to the event. Her outfit was improper, offensive and has caused public outrage,” Minister Nguyen Ngoc Thien told legislators in Hanoi, according to Vietnam Express.
Thien reportedly ordered officials to investigate the model for possible violations in Vietnam’s strict public decency laws.
At present, the Southeast Asian country is known to punish those who wear skimpy clothing in public with hefty fines — a consequence Trinh will likely face.
Many reportedly slammed Trinh’s taste as a disgrace to the country. Across message boards, users described her dress as “sexually explicit,” “weird” and “gross,” VNExpress said in another report.
Despite the backlash, the 29-year-old remains confident in her choice of clothing.
“I’ve got a lot of praise for my outfit,” she said. “I don’t care if people criticize it because I felt pretty in the dress, which made a good impression on the Cannes red carpet. I cannot satisfy the whole world.”
While Trinh’s look mostly received hate at home, her Instagram followers — which have soared to 2.4 million — showered it with love.
