Bretman Rock Dedicates His Nylon Magazine Cover to ‘All Gay, Queer Filipino Kids’
By Ryan General
Filipino American internet personality Bretman Rock recently described his recent magazine cover on Nylon Manila as his “love letter to all gay, queer Filipino kids.”
“For all the Baklas”: The Hawaii-based social media sensation shared an emotional moment with his Instagram followers after gracing the cover of the June issue of Nylon Manila.
- Last Saturday, Bretman unveiled a photo of the cover on Instagram, dedicating it to “all the Baklas.”
- In the Filipino language, the term “bakla” refers to males at birth who adopt a feminine gender expression.
- According to Bretman, the entire project was all-Filipino throughout as he worked with an entire team of Filipino creatives, “from the Filipino banters behind the scene, the bibinka [sic] (Filipino rice cake) and Jollibee we had for lunch and being on FaceTime with Manila the whole day.”
“Iconic” cover: The 22-year-old star of “MTV Following: Bretman Rock” was left in tears talking about the “Pride-themed” cover on his Instagram stories.
- “I don’t even think you guys realize how important this cover is to me and how iconic I think it is,” he said.
- Bretman added that it’s a big moment for him because “it’s not all the time that you get to see an openly gay man on the cover of a magazine, especially back home in the Philippines.”
- He revealed that he dedicated the cover to gay kids in the Philippines because he believes “we all deserve our own magazine cover.”
Bretman was previously featured on the cover of the UK-based “Gay Times” magazine, according to Cosmo.ph. He was also included on Variety’s 2020 “Power of Young Hollywood” list and received the 2021 “Breakthrough Social Star” at the MTV Movie and TV Awards back in May.
