BLACKPINK makes comeback after almost 2 years with ‘Pink Venom’
K-pop girl group BLACKPINK released their hotly anticipated comeback single “Pink Venom” on Friday.
The music video to the song, also uploaded to YouTube on Friday, has already racked up over 52 million views at the time of this writing..
During a press conference for its release, member Jennie noted: “Since the moment we debuted as BLACKPINK, we’ve been portraying that kind of contrasting image as our greatest charm. A loveable poison; pretty poison. I think it’s a phrase that captures our identity. It’s also a very conceptual song, as it’s the first revelation of ‘Born Pink.’”
An example of said contrast is how the track combines the hip-hop elements the quartet is known for, even sampling a part of Rihanna’s “Pon De Replay,” with the sounds of the geomungo, a traditional Korean string instrument. YG Entertainment has called the music video their most expensive production to date.
BLACKPINK will perform “Pink Venom” at the MTV Video Music Awards for their U.S. awards show debut on Aug. 28. Thai member Lisa is nominated for the Best K-pop award for her “Lalisa” solo, and the group is nominated for Best Metaverse Performance for their virtual concert collaboration with “PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds Mobile.” The track comes as a primer for their September album “Born Pink,” which OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder hinted he was creatively involved in..
Coinciding with the “Pink Venom” release is the global “Light Up the Pink” campaign, which will see various landmarks like the Brooklyn Bridge in New York and the Santa Monica ferris wheel in Los Angeles light up to commemorate the comeback.
Announced in celebration of the group’s sixth anniversary, YG Entertainment superstars will venture out on a world tour starting in October, hitting up over 25 cities from North America, Europe and Asia-Pacific.
YG Entertainment has called the world tour the largest in history for a K-pop girl group and said their comeback will kick off “a continuous large-scale project which will extend through the second half of the year.”
In other BLACKPINK news, Jennie will make her acting debut in HBO’s upcoming drama series “The Idol.”
