BLACKPINK showcases Korean culture during history-making Coachella debut

BLACKPINK made history as the first Korean group to headline Coachella during this year’s first weekend.

This follows their debut performance in 2019, where they were the first female K-pop act to perform at the festival. The group’s performance included tracks across their entire discography, such as “Kill This Love,” “Pretty Savage,” “Typa Girl,” “Whistle,” “Lovesick Girls,” “Tally,” “Playing with Fire” and “Forever Young.”

Each of the members also gave a solo performance, including Jennie’s unreleased remix version of “You & Me,” Jisoo’s debut solo single “Flower,” Rosé’s “Gone” and “On the Ground” and a more explicit, F-bomb laden version of Lisa’s “Money.”

Throughout the performance, the group highlighted many elements of Korean culture, including through their introductory speech in Korean, traditional Korean dances and the dancheong, a traditional decorative roof that adorned the background of Jisoo’s solo stage, which was also transitioned over to Jennie’s solo stage. 

Moreover, during their performance of “Typa Girl,” BLACKPINK introduced the traditional fan dance buchaechum as dancers carried out feathery hand fans. Additionally, they wore outfits inspired by cheollik, a type of Korean hanbok. They were embroidered with traditional symbols to represent longevity and nature.  

Immediately following their Coachella set, BLACKPINK announced the dates and venues of their “Born Pink” North American encore concerts. They will return to North America for four encore performances in New Jersey, Las Vegas, San Francisco and Los Angeles in August.
