BLACKPINK’s Jisoo blooms in long-awaited debut solo album ‘Me’
BLACKPINK’s Jisoo released her highly anticipated debut solo album “Me,” along with the music video for her song “Flower,” on Friday.
The 28-year-old artist reached a historic milestone with her new album, as she became the first female K-pop soloist to amass 1 million pre-orders.
“Me” was composed by longtime BLACKPINK collaborators Kush, 24 and VVN. It comes with the B-side track “All Eyes On Me,” made by YG Entertainment and BLACKPINK lead producer Teddy Park.
YG Entertainment teased in February that the music video for “Flower” had the highest production cost to date for a BLACKPINK video.
Fans speculated that part of Jisoo’s solo music video was shot in Los Angeles, as her team previously shared photos of a Hollywood film set with an L.A. location tag on Instagram.
“It was all shot in the U.S., and shooting at Universal Studios was so memorable,” she said. “We shot at an empty street that felt like being inside the ‘Truman Show.’ You will be able to find diverse versions of me.”
The K-pop star also shared that fellow BLACKPINK member Rosé visited her on set.
“[Rosé] came to see me when I was shooting the music video,” Jisoo said. “I was a bit lonely from working alone, as I am used to working with my teammates, but when I saw Rosé, I was so happy and instantly filled with energy.”
During a countdown livestream event for “Me” on Thursday, Jisoo also shared that Rosé helped her co-design her album’s flower logo.
As for why “Flower” was chosen as the title track for “Me,” Jisoo revealed that it shows her at her best.
“I chose ‘Flower’ as the titular track because it is the track that best describes me and the vocal, performance and visual effects are well-harmonized in this song,” she said.
“It is a dance song but at the same time lyrical with an addictive hook,” she added.
Jisoo also shared that she thought deeply about how to “show the soloist Jisoo instead of the BLACKPINK Jisoo.”
I continuously developed music that only I can do and that I am good at. During the process, I found a new “me.” I completed this album which carries my story by giving personal ideas not only to music but also to concept establishment, styling and music video production.
Jisoo is the fourth and final member of BLACKPINK to release a solo project after Jennie, who released her single “Solo” in 2018, and Rosé and Lisa, who released their respective solo albums “R” and “Lalisa” in 2021.
The K-pop quartet are currently on their “Born Pink” world tour. Next month, they will make history as the first K-pop girl group to headline Coachella.
