YG Entertainment released a statement announcing the long-awaited comeback of Korean boy band Big Bang as well as the end of member T.O.P’s contract with the agency.
“Big Bang is scheduled to release a new song this spring. They have finished recording and are currently preparing to shoot their music video,” YG Entertainment announced on Monday, according to Soompi.
Big Bang, one of the biggest groups in the K-pop industry, debuted in 2006 with the album “Big Bang Vol. 1 – Since 2007.” Its members have been dubbed the “Kings of K-pop” following their success and impact in the music industry. Their upcoming single will be the boy band’s first release since their 2018 song “Flower Road,” according to NME
In addition to the band’s long-awaited comeback, YG Entertainment also announced that band member Choi Seung-hyun, better known by his stage name T.O.P, will leave the agency after 16 years.
“T.O.P’s exclusive contract with YG has ended, and he will be taking on a wide variety of new challenges as both an artist and an entrepreneur,” the label stated. “We respected T.O.P’s desire to broaden the scope of his individual activities aside from just his promotions with BIGBANG, and he successfully came to an agreement about this with the other members.”
“As long as the conditions are right, [T.O.P] will always participate in BIGBANG’s activities whenever he is able,” they added, as translated by Soompi
The boy band originally debuted with five members, but they will continue on as a quartet following ex-member Seungri’s retirement in 2019 after his involvement in the Burning Sun scandal, as NextShark previously reported. Seungri faced a total of nine charges related to prostitution, drug trafficking and police corruption. He reportedly admitted to all charges during his Jan. 27 trial. His three-year jail sentence was reduced to 18 months.
The official release date of Big Bang’s latest song is yet to be announced.
