Awkwafina is optimistic about a sequel to “Shang-Chi,” sharing in a recent interview that writer and director
About her role: Awkwafina, whose real name is Nora Lum, 35, played Katy Chen in “Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings.” She is the titular character’s (Shaun’s/Shang-Chi’s) best friend and was instrumental in helping save his mother’s mystical home of Ta Lo from the Dweller-in-Darkness.
Awkwafina’s role will be important for the story’s continuity as she was present in the film’s post-credit scene. In it, they meet Wong (Benedict Wong), Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo) and Carol Danvers/Captain Marvel (Brie Larson) to talk about Shang-Chi’s (Simu Liu) rings.
What she’s saying: In a new interview with Screen Rant, Awkwafina praised Cretton, 45, for his work, saying she is thrilled for what the director brings to “Shang-Chi 2.”
“If it does happen, I’m just really excited to see where Katy will go,” she said. “I think Destin is such an amazing filmmaker, working with him was incredible on the first ‘Shang-Chi.’ I really think that he might have something exciting, so I’m very excited for that.”
What we know so far: Little is known about the status of “Shang-Chi 2,” but hints have been around for months. In July, Liu said it may not be released until after an “Avengers” film, which could potentially be “The Kang Dynasty” in 2026 or “Secret Wars” in 2027.
Cretton, who was previously tapped to direct “The Kang Dynasty,” recently left the project to focus on “Shang-Chi 2.” Aside from the highly anticipated sequel, he will concentrate on the Marvel TV series “Wonder Man.”
It remains to be seen who will take over the helm for the next “Avengers” movie. Among the names being thrown in the mix include Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead, who both directed several episodes in the second season of “Loki.”
