While “The Farewell” fared well against “Avengers: Endgame” in this year’s best per-theater average at the domestic box office, Awkwafina’s dad will always be her number one fan.
In a post on Instagram on Sunday, Awkwafina shared a text she received from her father, Wally, after coming to see a showing of “The Farewell.”
The film follows Billi (played by Awkwafina), a Chinese American woman who finds out about her grandmother’s cancer, but must keep the “good lie.”
“We’ve talked a lot about universality, a way for many to personally relate to something so specific,” the 31-year-old actress and rapper said about her dad’s text.
Awkwafina’s dad could not get the movie off his mind and he praised his daughter’s performance on the big screen.
“You did a great job and Lucy says same thing. I am so proud of you. Imagine seeing a movie with people laughing and crying and it’s my daughter up there. But we been through those things with your mom, grandpa and your relationship with grandma so it’s familiar with me,” her dad said in the text message.
The A24 film is directed by Lulu Wang and also stars Tzi Ma, Diana Lin, Zhao Shuzhen, Lu Hong and Jiang Yongbo.
