New details have emerged for the upcoming “Avatar: The Last Airbender” animated film trilogy currently in the works at Paramount and Nickelodeon.
Details of the first film’s plot were released during a San Diego Comic-Con panel on Friday for the Nickelodeon podcast “Avatar: Braving the Elements,” hosted by voice actors of the franchise Janet Varney, the voice of Kora in “The Legend of Korra,” and Dante Basco, the voice of Zuko in “Avatar: The Last Airbender.” Varney, who was not at the event in person, shared the news with attendees in a pre-recorded video announcement.
With a copy of the novel “Avatar: The Rise of Kyoshi” in hand, Varney says in the video, “The first feature length movie from Avatar Studios will be focusing on Avatar Aang and his friends, and I for one cannot wait!”
There’s no word on which specific characters that will entail, but fans are excited by the possibility of seeing a reunion of Team Avatar, consisting of Aang, Katara, Sokka, Suki, Toph and Zuko. The series is also reportedly set between “Avatar: The Last Airbender” and “The Legend of Korra,” showcasing the group as young adults.
The upcoming animated trilogy was announced last month with news that Lauren Montgomery, a storyboard artist for the original series, has been set to direct. The films are currently in development at Nickelodeon’s Avatar Studios, which was formed in February 2021 to create movies and shows that expand upon the “Avatar: The Last Airbender” universe.
Original show creators Bryan Konietzko and Michael DiMartino are producing the films, as the two now serve as co-chief creative officers for Avatar Studios after having left a live-action series remake currently underway at Netflix. The original show’s executive producer Eric Coleman is also back to produce the upcoming movies.
“Avatar: The Last Airbender,” which aired from 2005 to 2008, follows a young boy named Aang as he discovers he’s the key to bringing peace to his war-torn world. As the Avatar, Aang embarks on a quest to master all four elements — Water, Earth, Fire and Air — with the help of the friends he meets along the way. “The Legend of Korra” followed up the hit series from 2012 to 2014, taking place in the aftermath of Aang’s death and the legacy he left on the world.
