Asian Games: 13-year-old skateboarder becomes China’s youngest gold medalist
Cui Chenxi, 13, won gold in women’s street skateboarding competition at the Asian Games, becoming China’s youngest gold medalist.
Cui’s win: On Wednesday, Cui outperformed her 18-year-old teammate Zeng Wenhui and earned praise for her landing off a difficult high rail. Cui reportedly employed a conservative strategy on her first run to secure some points and then pushed for a higher score on her second run, which proved successful even though she missed her last three tricks.
Zeng secured silver, while Japan’s Miyu Ito, 16, took home the bronze medal.
Women’s skateboarding has seen a trend of younger athletes dominating the sport. Cui’s victory was celebrated on Chinese social media, with users commending her youth and composure.
About Cui: The 13-year-old started roller skating at the age of 3 before eventually taking up skateboarding three years ago due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Following her win, Cui has set her sights on the Paris Olympics, aiming to make an impact on the international stage.
“This is just the beginning,” Cui said, according to CNN. “We must continue to work hard and strive for the Paris Olympics and get good results.”
Other competition updates: In the women’s park event, Japan’s Hinano Kusaki, 15, clinched gold, while Chinese skaters Li Yujuan, 20, and Mao Jiasi, 15, secured silver and bronze, respectively.
In the men’s street finals, Chinese skater Zhang Jie also won gold, while his teammate Su Jianjun took bronze to once again prove China’s dominance in the Asian Games.
