Asian American Politicians DEMAND Biden Appoint AAPI Members to Cabinet
The Congressional Asian Pacific American Caucus (CAPAC) has issued a signed statement urging President-Elect Joe Biden to appoint AAPI candidates to his Cabinet.
- “As you work to assemble your administration, CAPAC urges you to appoint highly qualified Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) candidates to your Cabinet and to ensure that AAPIs account for at least seven percent of cabinet-level and other appointed personnel within the federal workforce.”
- AAPIs make up 7% of the U.S. population with 23 million living in the country.
- AAPIs are the fastest growing racial group and electorate in the U.S.
- CAPAC’s statement pointed out that over two-thirds of the AAPI vote supported Biden’s election.
- The Obama administration included a record of three AAPI Cabinet Secretaries.
- The Trump administration included two AAPI women in his Cabinet.
The CAPAC statement continues: “In order to ensure your administration is filled with appointees who truly reflect the strength and diversity of our nation, we urge you to continue this trend of appointing AAPI candidates to the Cabinet and prioritizing AAPI representation throughout your administration.”
- In his victory speech, Biden stated that he “wanted a campaign that represented America, and I think we did that. Now that’s what I want the administration to look like,” according to NBC.
- As of Tuesday November 24, Biden has not yet picked any AAPI candidates for his cabinet outside of his Vice President-elect Kamala Harris.
- Chu told NBC Asian America that failure to appoint any AAPIs to the Cabinet would send a “terrible message that being inclusive does not require including AAPIs.”
- The statement was signed by 19 members of congress.
