Asian Americans are fastest-growing group of eligible voters in US: poll
Asian Americans have become the fastest-growing group of eligible voters in the United States, with a 15% increase, or about 2 million, in the past four years, according to a recent survey by the Pew Research Center.
Growth rates: Pew reports that the increase outpaces the growth rates of all eligible voters and Hispanic eligible voters, reaching a projected 15 million eligible voters for this year. Asian Americans are also expected to make up 6.1% of all eligible voters in the upcoming elections.
Asian American voters: Despite being less likely to be eligible voters due to immigration status, a majority are naturalized citizens, and they have higher educational attainment levels compared to the general eligible voter population.
Voters by state: California has the highest number of Asian American eligible voters, followed by New York, Texas, Hawaii and New Jersey.
Hawaii is the only state where Asian Americans constitute a majority of the eligible voter population, making up 55% of the electorate. The island state also has the highest share of Asians eligible to vote at about 71%. According to Pew, 50% of Asian American eligible voters in 2020 held a bachelor’s degree or higher, contrasting with 33% of all U.S. eligible voters.
