A new teaser released yesterday for Amazon Prime Video’s upcoming sci-fi series “Paper Girls” showcases an unseen serious side of comedian Ali Wong.
Based on Brian K. Vaughan and Cliff Chiang’s award-winning comic book series of the same name, “Paper Girls” follows the lives of four 12-year-old paper delivery girls in 1988 who become caught up in a war between time travelers.
During their jump in time, each of the girls meets the adult versions of themselves, including a young Erin, played by Riley Lai Nelet, who comes face to face with her 43-year-old self, played by Wong.
“What’re you doing in my house?” demands the young Erin.
“What’re you doing in my house?” asks Wong’s character.
The two soon realize they are the same person.
“This isn’t real, this isn’t real, this isn’t real,” says a stunned Wong in a later scene of the clip.
From the dramatic, dark tone shown in the trailer, it appears fans can anticipate seeing a new side of comedian Ali Wong, who has made a name for herself in both stand-up and romantic comedy (“Always Be My Maybe”).
Some Reddit users have already drawn comparisons between the upcoming series with the widely popular Netflix drama “Stranger Things.”
“Paper Girls” will be available to stream starting July 29 on Amazon Prime Video.
