The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has extended 398 invites to artists, directors and executives to join its organization this year.
About the invites: The Academy, which sent the invites on Wednesday, noted in a recent press release that the invitees were chosen based on “professional qualifications” and the Academy’s commitment to “representation, inclusion and equity.”
Team “EEAAO”: “Everything Everywhere All at Once” actors Ke Huy Quan, who won the best supporting actor award at the Oscars earlier this year, and Stephanie Hsu, who was nominated for a best supporting actress award at the award ceremony, were among the 398 individuals invited by the organization.
“EEAAO” directors Daniel Kwan and Daniel Scheinert, collectively known as the Daniels, were also notably invited.
Beyond “EEAAO”: This year’s other invitees include Indian actors N. T. Rama Rao Jr. and Ram Charan of “RRR,” Indian cinematographer K.K. Senthil Kumar, Iranian French actor Zar Amir-Ebrahimi, Japanese actor Sakura Ando, Taiwanese actor Chang Chen, South Korean actor Park Hae-il and British Japanese novelist Kazuo Ishiguro, among many others.
Key details: About 34% of the 398 invitees this year belong to an underrepresented racial or ethnic community. Meanwhile, 52% of them are reportedly from 50 countries and/or territories outside the U.S.
If all the invitees accept their invitations, the Academy will reportedly have a total of 9,375 voting members, with 34% of them identifying as female, 18% of them identifying as non-white and 20% of them identifying as non-American.
