$7 Ramen Shop in Tokyo Earns Michelin Star for 2017
By Ryan General
Another ramen restaurant in Tokyo has been granted a highly coveted Michelin star by the renowned Michelin dining guide for its 2017 edition.
Following last year’s Tsuta, ramen place Nakiryu has become the second ramen restaurant in the world to ever receive the prestigious star. The award, announced by the guide on Tuesday, November 29, also revealed that Tsuta received its star for the second time for the new guide.
According to RocketNews24, the announcement has already made an impact on the tiny ramen restaurant that seats about 10 customers with people lining up in long queues an hour even be its scheduled opening at 11:30 a.m. One line extends from the entrance to the next block and another waits on the other side of the road. Orders are made via a ticket machine and takes about 15-20 minutes to be served.
Nakiryu offers a wide variety of noodle dishes from other parts of the globe. One of the most popular among customers is its spicy Chinese Sichuan dish Dandan noodles, which is filled with hand-made noodles, topped with a generous serving of scallions, minced pork and a spicy sauce.
“The soup was thick, yet mild, and after it had passed down the back of the throat, it left a remarkable mixture of deliciously sour and salty flavors on the tongue. How they managed to pack such a flavor punch with a mellow broth like this was truly astounding,” a RocketNews24 reported declared upon trying the dish which was reasonably priced at 800 yen ($6.99).
“These Dandan noodles truly had everything: a wonderful depth of flavor, deliciously tantalizing sour and salty overtones, and a satisfying balance of textures that made it a spectacular dish,” the report added, praising not only the noodles but the ingredients and the broth as well.
Even before the restaurant earned the recognition, customers have already been leaving positive comments for Nakiryu on travel review site TripAdvisor:
The now Michelin-starred ramen shop serves delicious meals from Wednesday to Monday (closed on Tuesdays) 11:30 a.m. – 3:00 p.m. (lunch); 6:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. (dinner) at 2-34-4 Minami Otsuka, Toshima 170-0005.
